Snowstorm Targets Tri-State: What NYC Can Expect Overnight

A quick but impactful snowstorm is taking aim at the tri-state area this weekend, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for New York City, Long Island, and several counties across New Jersey. The advisory is active from Saturday night through early Sunday, setting the stage for the region’s first notable winter event of the season.

According to officials, New York City can expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, with heavier totals possible farther east. Parts of eastern Long Island and the Jersey Shore could see higher accumulations as the storm’s core pushes inland.

Timing: When the Snow Arrives

Forecasters report that the system will move in late Saturday night, quickly spreading snow across the region. While the storm is not expected to linger, it will pack its punch between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday, when the heaviest snow bands are likely to fall.

By daybreak Sunday, most of the precipitation should taper off, leaving behind slick roads and bitter cold. Temperatures across the tri-state will struggle to climb out of the low 30s, with gusty winds making it feel even colder.

City Preparations: DSNY on Alert

To ensure roadways stay safe, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has issued a Snow Alert from 7 p.m. Saturday through 2 a.m. Sunday. As noted by DSNY officials, crews are ready with:

  • Pretreated roads using brine
  • 700+ salt spreaders loaded and positioned
  • Plows prepared to deploy once snowfall reaches 2 inches

“DSNY will begin spreading salt on roads, highways and bike lanes at the first sign of precipitation, and will begin plowing when and if snow depths reach 2 inches,” the department stated Friday.

Despite the incoming winter weather, DSNY does not expect any changes to Monday’s trash collection schedule, reassuring New Yorkers that normal operations should resume swiftly.
