NEW YORK CITY — A winter storm blanketing the New York City region with snow caused widespread power disruptions early Sunday, leaving hundreds of residents without electricity across multiple boroughs.
According to Con Edison, more than a dozen power outages were reported throughout the city as snow and winter conditions intensified overnight. Utility officials confirmed that outages affected parts of Queens, the Bronx, and other boroughs, underscoring how vulnerable infrastructure can become during severe winter weather.
In Jamaica, Queens, an outage impacted approximately 85 residents, while another disruption in the Bronx left around 75 customers without power as of Sunday morning. Additional smaller outages were reported elsewhere, though Con Edison noted that crews were actively working to assess damage and restore service as quickly as possible.
The outages come as snowfall created hazardous travel conditions across the region, with icy roads, reduced visibility, and bitter temperatures complicating emergency response and repair efforts. City officials urged residents to limit travel where possible and to use caution when relying on alternative heating sources.
Con Edison advised customers experiencing outages to report them immediately and to stay away from downed power lines, which can remain dangerous even when buried under snow. Residents were also encouraged to conserve phone battery life and check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly seniors and those with medical needs.
As NY Buzz continues to monitor the situation, utility officials say restoration timelines may vary depending on weather conditions, but crews remain on standby throughout the storm to minimize prolonged disruptions.
